7/10 "Hamidashi Creative" is a somewhat peculiar work. Released in 2020, it wasn't until 2021 and 2022 that it made waves in the Galgame community. The character Izumi Hiyori, in particular, became quite popular, even among many Galgame fans who haven't played the game. As a " moe for the sake of moe" genre work, the quality of "Hamidashi Creative" might be considered decent. While many of its characters are relatively novel and interesting, it doesn't live up to the acclaim for its storyline, amounting to a fairly average work. This work encapsulates many elements of contemporary Japanese otaku subculture, ranging from gacha mobile games, SNS, Doujin circles, Doujin artists, Japanese historical Neta, voice actors, magazine models, to the recently popular VTubers. Its characters and script, rich in otaku attributes, could resonate deeply with players within the community, and also offer those unfamiliar with this subculture a glimpse into its intricacies. The characters in this work have distinct and interesting personalities, with considerable effort put into their development, resulting in well-rounded character portrayals. Although the overall story logic might seem somewhat disjointed and unrestrained, it surprisingly provides a rich and realistic depiction of otaku characters' psychological states and appearances. Conflicts between characters are uncommonly well presented for this genre, with the resolution of these conflicts and the advancement of the plot being handled competently. The Japanese pop band-style rock theme song and the soft band background music are unexpectedly outstanding, combined with the overall exaggerated yet tense voice acting performance, vividly presenting a campus story filled with the zest of youth. However, it's clear that "Hamidashi Creative" relies heavily on its character designs, with its storyline being merely passable. To extol it for its narrative is somewhat an overstatement. The plot unfolds in a rather dramatic and clichéd manner, with insufficient groundwork for the romantic developments. The harem atmosphere in the common route is overly pronounced, and there's an abundance of softcore content. These excessively entertaining elements and the shallow storyline leave no room for profound reflection. In addition to the exceedingly mundane and lengthy everyday scenes, the overall pace of the story is quite slow, and the voice actors' overly enthusiastic and exaggerated performances sometimes seem overdone. The abundance of otaku jargon, knowledge, culture, as well as Japanese literary, cultural, and historical memes, somewhat raise the barrier to understanding the work. Furthermore, the PC version of the game has issues like crashing during long periods of fast-forwarding and a severe bug that may force players to delete their save files to continue playing, severely detracting from the gaming experience. Overall, "Hamidashi Creative" is a standard school youth otaku-centric " moe for the sake of moe " work, relying heavily on its character designs. For players not very familiar with Galgames and otaku culture, it might not offer much enjoyment. If players are not interested in the characters, which are the main selling point of the work, there's no need to engage with it. Conversely, a fondness for the characters can motivate players to play and empathize with the characters and settings.
