The game follows the usual trope of other FMV dating games especially like "Love is All Around" until the last chapters of each heroine you have chosen. What some, I believe, praise the game is its plot twists involved by the end of the last chapters. Even the Main Character (MC) has chosen its lover, not everything is simple and hardships do occur in every relationship. This is the unique factor that differentiate itself among the numerous dating sims that are available on Steam. PROS: a. The scenery is superb. A lot of outside background shots that are amazing. b. The actresses show amazing acting range from happy to sad or being hurt (in other words, amazing 180 degrees changes). Take the cosplayer for example, I feel cringe for her at first until I finally choose and acknowledge her. c. The actresses are somewhat pretty; nevertheless, some of them are really cute in further interactions. d. Unique plot twists. CONS: a. The button mini-games sucks. Instead of using arrow keys or buttons to follow, they have the bright idea of using your mouse to pop the bubbles all over the screen. They apply the tablet game mechanics into the mouse and keyboard setup which you cannot keep up when using the mouse. b. Its English User Interface (UI) needs a lot of work. English translation are readable (ignore the phone messages as these are not translated are rather useless). c. Hostility among the actresses are relatively few and they all become best friends. (well except one LOL) d. Recap gallery scene subsections are not available. Need to rewatch some scenes, one then need to go to the storyline and select the scene. Overall, if you enjoy "Love is All Around" of its innocent love plot, then you can pick this up as it has the same footing. It may feel familiar at first, but the endings are unique and are not seen on any other FMV games. It may show that it has limited budget but it still do its best in showcasing its charms. Rankings of my FMV games with English subtitles: 1. Charming Hearts 2. Knowledge or Know Lady 3. Love is All Around (the O.G.) 4. Director Simulator 5. My Destiny Girl 6. Secrets of the Heartbeat Note: All of them are good, I would never put the bad ones on the list. Next in line: Korean FMV: "Five Hearts Under One Roof" and Chinese FMV: "I've Fallen for You"

Director Simulator ( a remake of LiAA and VFTP? ) This game is wide in features and deep in narrative. It shows what an interactive game truly is. It’s more than just a movie with multiple endings; each choice you make has an engaging and meaningful impact. I'm not sure if anyone is aware that this game seems intended as a remake of Love is All Around (LiAA) and Vanity Fair: The Pursuit (VFTP), or if it's just a coincidence. Let’s look into the detailed comparison and decide. Is this game a remake of LiAA and VFTP? 1) This game appears to intentionally replicate many of the main female characters' personalities from LiAA, and the game is called Director Simulator, which mirrors the story of VFTP, and the player character’s name is very similar to the player character's name from VFTP. 2) I realize that many of the endings in this game are twists on the endings of LiAA and VFTP, turning the less favorable endings from those games into more satisfying and favorable resolutions. 3) This appears to be a challenge to both LiAA and VFTP, as it combines elements from both games into a single game, aiming to demonstrate how it is similar to and surpasses both, particularly in its endings. Would this game succeed in meeting this challenge? Let’s explore this in detail and examine all the features. The Storyline, Options Selection and Characters 1) Like in LiAA, players face challenging decisions with multiple main female characters, each offering their own options. Choosing an option for one character increases her favorability, while not selecting options for the other characters decreases their favorability. The game effectively replicates the fun and challenging aspects of LiAA. 2) The plotline of this game is similar to that of VFTP, featuring multiple quick and death endings, certain plot points that lead to the next chapter, and introducing a new design where players can select different plotlines from a popup page This new design enhances the already praised plot structure of VFTP. Besides that, the game is designed with a plot that directs players back to Chapter 1 before reaching the end, allowing them to replay with different options after the first round. With the knowledge gained from their initial playthrough, players can now make more informed choices and select the correct options in this replay. This is an amazing storyline design—must try it yourself. 3.1) You will find that many of the main female characters' personalities in this game are exactly the same as those in LiAA. However, this game has shifted character popularity by transforming the least liked character, Zhong Zhen (from LiAA), into the most liked character, Ye Wen (in this game), according to player votes on the leaderboard. This change is driven by Ye Wen, who has emphasized her 'outer self' rather than her 'inner self', which is also part of her personality. Isn’t this a twist on creating a more favorable outcome compared to the LiAA ending? 3.2) Another example is the ending of Ouyang Lu. Her story’s ending is similar to He Xiaomeng’s (from VFTP), but in this game, it transforms the regrettable ending of VFTP into a good ending where she doesn’t regret giving up her career because she clearly knows why she made that decision. 3.3) Furthermore, the ending of Su Yimo, whose character and story are similar to Shen Huixin (from LiAA). Some players may have disliked Shen Huixin for being childish and forceful, but in this game, players do not hate Su Yimo for repeatedly acting out her fake death after found her ending. Instead, feel regret for not treating her well. 3.4) Aren't all these characters and endings similar to those in LiAA and VFTP, with a twist for a better outcome, or is it just a coincidence? The characters' personalities from a horoscope viewpoint: DS Sun Rising LiAA VFTP Ye Wen Leo Taurus Zhong Zhen Ouyang Lu Capricorn Lin Yunsi He Xiaomeng Su Yimo Aries Gemini Shen Huixin Gu Meng Sagittarius Aries Zheng Ziyan Lin Xiyan Cancer Virgo Gao Leng Scorpio Gemini Sun sign - inner self (objectives, life goal) Rising sign - outer self (actions, behavior) The QTE, Lesson, Horror, Mystery 1) It features various QTEs for photo capturing, singing, basketball, and fighting. While achieving high scores in singing and basketball can be challenging, it doesn’t affect story progression but contributes to Steam achievements. This feature is not present in LiAA and VFTP. 2) This game is a dating simulator (teaching dialogue choices for successful dates), a love simulator (focusing on deeper emotions and romantic paths), and a life simulator (covering relationships, career, and personal growth). Overall, it teaches players significant lessons, including a few big insights and many smaller ones. In contrast, LiAA is primarily a love simulator, while VFTP focuses on life simulation. 3) The game features slight horror plotlines that act as punishments for the player when they lie to the main female character. It is quite engaging and has some scary moments during these plotlines. 4) You'll find a mystery in this game; explore it yourself without spoilers. Besides that, this game really shows what an interactive game is. It’s more than just a movie with multiple endings; each choice you make has an engaging and meaningful impact. The Love Story This game offers more love stories than LiAA, and these stories teach players valuable lessons about love. However, unlike LiAA, some of the love stories here are quite complex and have a very sad narrative. 1) What if one day your loved one is getting married to someone else? This game teaches you how to take over the bride in such a painful and serious situation. 2) Marrying a superstar is similar to the earlier mention of He Xiaomeng's ending in VFTP. This game illustrates how what seems regrettable can actually become an unregrettable ending. 3) The most touching and sad ending in this game is the most painful and regrettable (without spoilers, let you find it yourself). This hits the player deeply, and after experiencing this ending, would you change to become a person who cherishes those around you more and doesn’t mind when they bother you? life is short. 4) Two more, but that should be enough for here. The narrative in this game is very rich and gives an experience that teaches the player some lessons. 5) Most of the sequence of selection options to achieve good endings in this game centers around holding on and letting go, which makes me think of the idea that "Love is like flying a kite: you need to pull and release. If you only pull, you are dominating the circumstance without giving the other person the freedom to fulfill their wishes or choices. However, you must always watch it and hold the string, pulling when necessary to maintain the connection. The other person will also consider fulfilling your wishes just as you do for them. The Conclusion and Score 1) The rich story in this game is incredible. It’s not just a game for fun; it also offers significant lessons, including a few big insights and many smaller ones. The deep stories in this game have reached the level of VFTP and would even surpass both VFTP and LiAA. 2) However, this game may not be favored by youth, as it is quite heavy on emotion. For adults, this game is rich in lessons and experiences. For younger audiences and students, Charming Hearts is the most similar game designed specifically for them. For adults, this game could be seen as surpassing both LiAA and VFTP. 12/10 (Super Masterpieces)

Despite a bad first impression, Director Simulator manages to recover thanks to a strong finish. Initially the story is poor, because it is disjointed, illogical, and somewhat childish. Encounters with the admirers are coincidental and nonsensical. Inadequate reasons are made to get players to choose which admirer they want to spend time with. The narrative rarely makes logical sense. When you get a job for a boss admirer, you never do any work and she instead follows to random places. One admirer stays in your apartment and pretends to be dead every time you come home. Another is a gamer who seems completely aloof and talks in riddles. There is not much finesse to the romance arcs and scenes are thrown together at random to take you to places like an amusement park, aquarium, glass bridge, gym, school yard, boat trip etc. The only narrative thread that links it all together is the player-character’s desire to make a movie, but this is tenuous and might be near invisible depending on choices. Yet all the admirers eventually gang up together to make it happen (was done better in Love is all Around). Then, while making the movie, you have to pick your heroine from the group. It is a fairly shoddy main arc, when taken at face value. The other problem is the poor English translation. None of the phone text messages are translated and the only silver lining is there are not many and player interaction is never required. All of the player choices arelistedlikethiswithoutspaces, which is annoying, but the worst part is that many are vague in terms of what your character will say or do—thankfully the timeline can be quickly accessed to retry a segment. Somehow it manages to recover from these major blemishes at the end. When you pick your lead heroine, it begins the final romance arc for them. And here is when their true personality emerges, sometimes in crazy and dramatic ways that are memorable, funny, or poignant. It is almost like 2/3rds of the narrative work has gone into the endings. Failed romances are the default, so finding the good endings takes a bit of trial and error but generally rewarding. The finales are also multifaceted in ways that are hard to describe, and it is a case where those silly parts in the story suddenly make much more sense. There are some unusual gameplay elements but not much interactivity. QTEs associated with singing take a few tries to get a perfect score, and it is impossible to watch the performance and perform well. Photographs are regularly taken of the admirers, and you have to time your shots with poses, which is a little ambiguous but works okay; in a group setting, the one photographed the most gets an affection meter boost, which is neat and should have been used more. At times you can choose which order you want to visit them—demonstrating the game’s proclivity toward jumbled scenes—but this changes nothing in terms of affection. Completing one full romance (to credits) will take about 2.5 hours. There is maybe 5hrs more content via branching paths. If you only go through one romance and call it quits, then Director Simulator is hard to recommend. Only when doing 3+ endings do things actually fall into place, and while not the best game of this type, it manages to wipe away most of its poor first impression.

This game is full of plot twists and a fresh take in the romance FMV genre. It only has a few issues which do not hinder the quality of this great game much: The bad: 1. The English subtitles are not the best but they are definitely good enough to enjoy the game. You will rarely get confused. But handy messages are not translated at all which is an issue. 2. The mini games are hard. Its actually very hard to achieve high results in some mini games. Definitely too hard for most players. However you can still progress and unlock everything without perfect scores. 3. The game lacks a bit of sexyness but it makes up for it with its story. Thats the only bad thing i can say about this game its just that good. Now lets talk about why i enjoyed this game immensely: This game is full of plot twists, early endings and surprises. Your choices do matter a lot and will influence what happens in a major degree. The game is filmed very well and the video quality is good enough. The favor system actually takes some effort and thinking and will influence what endings you can get. My first play through took me roughly 4 hours (endings for 2 girls) and you will need multiple playthroughs so i think you get enough playtime for the price. The storyboard works well but is not perfect. However it should not hinder you in anyway. I did not encounter a single bug so far. IMPORTANT NOTE: For a lot of Happy Endings you need to NOT choose the breakup option but instead WAIT after a while a new option will appear allowing you to get together. Check your storyboard if there are 2 branches for a scene with only 1 choice you can wait to get the second choice aka HE. Its a bit dumb but do not miss out on some Happy Endings! You do not have to do it in the first try. You can choose BE first and come back to it and still get HE so do not fear. I can highly recommend this game its a well planned out game that surprised me. Here is my romance FMV Ranking: 1. Knowledge or know lady 2. Ouch! So many beauties! --> Most Sexy FMV get it on Epic 3. Charming Hearts 4. Director Simulator 5. Drive Me Crazy --> now working 6. They're All After Me 11. Intonight --> Get it on Epic Steam banned it. 12. Customized Girlfriend 13. In Search Of You 14. To Be In Love With Girls Group (the Chinese one) 15. Wondering when will new DLC for 'Love is All Around' or 'Knowledge or Know Lady' ever come out? Fret not! Here comes 'Director Simulator' (a rare instance of an accurate/direct translation of the Chinese title), another romance FMV game with 6 female love interests. How does it fare compared to others in the genre? Warning: There will be some story spoilers below! Pros: - The overall tone and writing is quite over-the-top, which makes for a light-hearted and fun experience if you don't take the story developments too seriously from Su Yimo constantly pretending to be dead to get protagonist Luo Yu's attention to celebrity Ouyang Lu immediately becoming friends with corporate heiress Ye Wen after a game of volleyball. It's something out of a romance manga/anime! - The design of the choices buttons blend in very nicely and makes the experience less like a video game and more immersive. - Closer to the end of the story, your choices have greater impact like if you choose to take photos of Ouyang Lu despite promising to love and be with the youthful Lin Xiyan, she would get incredibly jealous and somehow overnight becomes a Japanese horror movie killer who either wants to kill Luo Yu or her love rivals (Which is well-acted as it made me very unsettled!) - The mini-games like taking photos of the various love interests and typing in questions into a Magic-8 ball style book add some variety to the game. - The consequences of some choices are surprising, like if you do not look at bodyguard Jiang Zhiwan's...ahem...goods during a gym session, she would feel uncomfortable at Luo Yu staring at her face rather than seeking a peak at her goods. I feel the developer did such choices to be cheeky and self-referential about this genre. - There are some sweet moments like when the fierce Ouyang Lu gets embarrassed and hides behind a curtain when Luo Yu shares directly his feelings with her. - The ending credits song/main menu theme is really catchy and good. Cons: - Although the over-the-top tone can be fun, but I must state it has its downs. Serious moments where I felt you got to see the various women open up to Luo Yu only arguably start to occur in Chapter 4, such as Ye Wen sharing her view of love not being just about being joyful all the time or Jiang Zhiwan sharing her admiration for Luo Yu to keep pursuing his film-making dream. This is past the story's halfway mark and makes the romantic developments feel less realistic. - The timing of these serious moments feels off due to the story's exaggerated tone and faster pace. In Ye Wen's ending, Luo Yu and Ye Wen have an argument that reflects their different social backgrounds that is an interesting point to explore, but it felt like it came out of nowhere and wasn't given time to develop. - As a Chinese speaker, I could tell the translation was done through a translation software without further editing to improve the English grammar and structure. Some nuances are missed like Ye Wen calling Luo Yu "Little Brother" (basically she becomes his Sugar Mama) or things are translated literally. - The mini-games, particularly the music one is more STRESSFUL AND ANXIETY INDUCING THAN ANY HORROR GAME! It's like the Teatime mini-game in 'Fire Emblem: Three Houses' where you have a limited time to click timed QTEs that appear all over the screen and the video content can make it distracting to click the QTEs. - In Lin Xiyan's ending, there is also a series of QTEs where you have to say romantic promises to her questions and you only have a few seconds to respond. Since it came out of nowhere, it really is too fast-paced for players to respond! - For the camera mini-game, there is no baseline or clues on what makes an "average", "nice" or "perfect" photo. - The endings, even the perfect ones are very abrupt with no sense of what post-romantic confession is like between Luo Yu and the chosen romantic interest. I think 'My Destiny Girls', 'Tomorrow's Love Puzzle' and 'Love is All Around' does a better job on this. Random Tidbits: - The guitar instrumental music used in the scenes when Ye Wen leaves her company to be with Luo Yu and the indoor snow playground scenes with Su Yimo was also used in 'Tomorrow's Love Puzzle', specifically for gym instructor Wang Yiman's endiing. - Ouyang Lu's stage name is 'Xiao Lu', which although spelled differently from the popular 'Love is All Around' love interest, may be a reference to the character. Verdict: Although I put a 'Recommended' verdict, I would suggest only getting 'Director Simulator' if you enjoy a very over-the-top romantic comedy that doesn't take the story or romantic developments too seriously. But if you are like me and like a well-paced romantic story with a nice balance of comedy and serious romance, I don't think this will suit you and I would suggest exploring other entries like 'Charming Hearts' or 'My Destiny Girls'
