_____________________________________________________________________ The game shines with a great art style and some decision options. Unfortunately, I am completely overwhelmed by the gameplay element of the protagonist's nervousness and how to regulate it . Definitely a beautiful graphic style, but for me, not necessarily the most captivating visual novel I have read.

I love this game and hate it at the same time. Nutshell: DO play it if you are very interested in a deep, rewarding, and creative story about life as a kid in 1999 China. DON'T play it if you get easily frustrated by a slow UI, don't like re-tracing your own steps and observing details, or aren't willing to follow a walkthrough step-by-step. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND getting the Kang Motor and the Yo-yo as fast as possible, because the game can be extremely burdensome otherwise. Even if you like solving things on your own, having these two objects will significantly improve your QOL when playing this game. Full review: First off, I have to thank the developers for releasing this game in English. It's a really unique VN that is grounded in realism but contains slight elements of fantasy....light magical realism, if you will. The whole thing can seem kind of mundane at first, but the little cultural tidbits and mini-games keep you chugging along. Some of the mini-games were so deep that I found myself having flashbacks to the Yakuza and Shenmue franchises. As the story progresses, things start to fall into place and one can get really invested in unraveling the final bits of mystery surrounding every character. Many of the conclusions will surprise you, while others will seem oddly relatable. As with many VNs, the main character is merely a shell through which one can explore the other characters, and has little distinguishing traits of his own. This helps to give the gamer a better sense of control and identify with the main character more. That being said, there was a point about halfway through the game where I felt really stuck and didn't know where to go. I chose the easier mode because I play VNs more for the story than for the puzzle solving. But even in the easier mode, I felt that much of the burden was still on the player to find out how to complete each route. And this game can be very unforgiving; there is only one way to successfully finish each each character's route, and if you get just one small aspect wrong, you have failed the route. And in order to re-do the route successfully, sometimes you have to click through an entire preparation day in order to re-acquire requisite items, as well as re-doing the entire day itself. To the developer's credit, there is a fast forward button, your increased courage eventually allows you to skip mealtimes, and there are the aforementioned Kang Motor and Yo-yo, which help you rewind and fast-forward time. But even with these perks, I'd often find myself impatiently clicking through the same scene over ten times, running between the same rooms, clicking thru the same actions and dialogue boxes, and waiting for the same slow animations over and over. In particular, the eye-opening animation as you woke up, the drawer sliding animation at the end of the day, and the slowly rising backpack at the end of each two hour scene felt extremely taxing. This is a game that you will need to finish in order to feel fully satisfied. It isn't one of those VNs where you make a few choices, find the end of a route, and can call it a day. It is like a gigantic puzzle that eggs you on, imploring you to keep going until you have put every single last piece in it's place. And once you have done so, the reward is well worth it. But if you dip your toes in and give up halfway through, you will leave feeling unsatisfied. That is why I can only recommend this game to certain types of gamer. Personally, I needed a walkthrough to finish the game. I am not the type of detail-oriented gamer that you need to be in order to find every single correct route. Thus, I believe the type of gamer who truly enjoys detective work or combing through lots of text will enjoy the old-school point and click-style challenge that this game brings. Also, I think that more casual gamers who are really interested in the premise or want to learn more about life in China will enjoy the game if they have a walkthrough in hand. But those looking for a smooth gaming experience, a VN experience that is more about personal choice rather than finding the right answer, or a bit of escapism should probably look elsewhere. I look forward to seeing more games from this studio in the future!
