A quick review of the game. Cradle of Nightmare Flowers An RPG made in RPG Maker. If the engine itself is a dealbreaker for you, feel free to stop reading now. Language Note The game is currently only available in Chinese. I played it using an external translation tool (essentially Google Translate), which caused issues like text overflowing dialogue boxes and occasional confusion. However, the gameplay itself is mostly understandable, and progression is manageable. The creator has stated they’ll release an official English translation after fixing all bugs, so be patient. Death Mechanics When you kill enemies, you don’t earn experience directly. Instead, you collect a currency (let’s call them "souls" due to translation quirks) to exchange for levels. Upon death, you lose a percentage of these souls (unsure if fixed or variable), and you cannot recover them. I appreciate not losing everything and avoiding the "corpse run" mechanic. You can save/load at any time via the menu, allowing you to save-scum before tough fights or areas to avoid losses. Visuals The aesthetic is subjective. Personally, I love it, but your mileage may vary. Sound/Music Some tracks are reused from other games (likely royalty-free), but the audio overall complements the atmosphere well. Again, subjective. Story Non-linear and requires interacting with the world and NPCs to piece together. Due to translation issues, incomplete text, and my lack of the "true ending," I won’t judge it here. Exploration Non-linear: The fast-travel system uses "nightmare flowers" as checkpoints. Selecting a destination shows a global map, but zones are stylized (e.g., a large room on the map may be a maze of interconnected areas). Oppressive Atmosphere: Starts with horror elements (tight spaces, jumpscares, invisible enemies) that ease slightly as you progress. Expect tension, not a peaceful stroll. Terrain Matters: You start with an invisibility skill to bypass 90% of enemies (all map-visible, no random encounters). However: Bloodstains break invisibility if stepped on. Cracks stun you, canceling invisibility. Traps require quick button presses or detours. Gated Areas: Require specific items. Multiple paths exist, encouraging replayability. Loot: Mostly consumables and equipment (rarely sold in shops). Secrets abound—interact with anything suspicious. Guidance: Minimal. To finish, you’ll need 4 key items to reach the final zone. If you dislike non-linear exploration, this isn’t for you. Combat RPG Maker Basics: Functional but simple. Weapon-Based Abilities: Your core skills (dodge, TP recovery) are fixed, but weapons define your combat options. Each has unique stats, effects, and skills. You can swap weapons mid-combat without losing a turn, encouraging adaptability. Consumables: Don’t consume turns but have per-turn limits (e.g., 1 healing potion, 3 throwable knives). Armor/Accessories: Classic stat boosts. Equip up to four accessories. Luck is critical—it’s an XP multiplier (e.g., 10 Luck = 100% XP, 15 Luck = 150%). Magic: Learned from spellbooks but must be manually equipped in a limited slot system. Vast variety, but I focused on weapons in my playthrough. Enemies & Bosses Regular Enemies: Can kill you in one hit if careless. Invisibility lets you skip most fights. Bosses: Two types: Invaders: Red mini-bosses that ambush you ( somes, repeatable, avoidable). Fog-Wall Bosses: Stronger, often with phases. Some have NPC allies (who can solo them!). Boss Rewards: Drop souls exchangeable for gear/spells (2 choices per soul, requiring NG+ for completion). Defeating bosses also raises a vague stat (possibly "madness" or "karma" ) affecting the ending. Keep it low for specific outcomes. Grinding Unnecessary. Bosses grant 10–40 levels each, and equipment/consumables trump stats. I ignored regular enemies, fleeing blocked-path fights. You can rush bosses and hit level 100+ easily. Conclusion A labor-of-love RPG Maker gem with surprises, references, and a tense, horror-tinged atmosphere. The non-linear structure and weapon-swapping combat stand out, though NPCs and companions deserve deeper mention. If you enjoy exploration-driven, punishing RPGs with creative mechanics, give it a try.

Pretty good game! The art is amazing and is easily one of the best parts of the game. The music is also pretty good. (Plenty of familiar BGM if you have played similar games before) The gameplay is also similar to BLACKSOULS and other RPG Maker games. You put on equipment and spells that you get from exploring, and then you fight enemies. The combat isn't difficult, but I did play at normal difficulty and unga bunga'd the entire game with a spam attack setup. I barely touched equipment swapping mid-fight and using spells/items, since it didn't feel like I needed them. There are probably some boss mechanics and aspects of combat that I never encountered because I just brute forced through them. It is definitely more easier and simpler compared to some of BLACKSOULS's fights where I needed specific setups and 10 million buffs and actions to not die in 1 turn. You also have a fuzzy ball companion that has their own equipment and abilities, but they were pretty useless to me the entire game so I didn't really care about it. I can't comment on the actual story much since I played the game with MTL, but there are some aspects that I have issues with. The lore is quite scattered around the map, making it difficult to keep track of. It didn't help that there were many different plot points and events going on in the background. (Maybe I have skill issue) Next, the flow of the game runs into some problems after the first few events. At the beginning tells you to look for your friend, with some notes and NPCs pointing you where to go. After meeting this friend, you get some hints on what to do next. Assuming you just followed what the NPCs tell you and didn't explore the entire map beforehand (I did), you eventually end up at a point where the flow of the game isn't guided by the NPCs. Instead, the game just throws hints and notes at you to tell you where to go. It doesn't feel natural that the game just tells me I need a key item for this thing and where to find it. Same goes for exploring the rest of the areas, there is barely any "real" reason for you to go there aside from a hint telling you to head that way. There are also quite a lot of NPCs that you can meet, some of them just being merchants while others have storylines. However, some of the NPC storylines feels incomplete and feels like there should be more to their story. You meet them around the map while exploring, then you find them at a different area to continue their storyline. Some of their new locations makes sense based on their story, but some of them feels strange to encounter, like "why are you here?" Some of the NPC stories also ends abruptly, they just sit at this location until the end of the game or disappear without a trace when it feels like their story hasn't reached a proper conclusion yet. I wish that there was more content for the NPCs in terms of events and gameplay aside from finding them at some place and then talking to them. There are a bunch of other things that could be improved such as the sanity system being irrelevant 90% of the time, the corruption-like mechanic (don't know a better term) from killing bosses being more impactful to the story, and hints not being spammed at me telling me there's a secret or to do something specific. Overall, I really enjoyed the game despite the problems above and finished it 100%. I'll definitely be replaying it once it gets an official English translation. TL;DR good game 11/10, if you're looking for something similar to BLACKSOULS but different this is it

This game is fun! I don't understand people saying that they can't read; you can put the game through a translation app. I am enjoying playing this game! I enjoy playing games in different languages since it gives you more enjoyment than knowing what is fully going on. I have made a video on it which should help people trying to get through the start if they can't translate it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDDO-d_PlFs

Honestly, the fact that this game exists and is on Steam is amazing. It’s inspired by BLACKSOULS, takes a lot from Fear & Hunger’s vibe, and it’s really well done. Right now, it’s only in Chinese, but the dev promised an English translation. So, let’s support the game so we can play it in English soon without having to rely on MTL!
