One of the best VNs with sensitive themes about empathy and humanity [Eng and Pt-BR review] Have you ever heard of a game that awakens a wave of feelings, sensations, a rollercoaster of emotions and in the end you think about something for a long time even after finishing the game? Nowadays, few games have such an effect and Hira Hira Hihiru was one of the strongest in this style that I have ever played. Sometimes I wonder if Hira Hira suffers from the limits of its medium, when I say medium I mean being a visual novel style game, because you know, being a VN greatly limits the audience you can reach and Hira Hira really is quite different from classic VNs, I would say that it really is pure literature and a "game" that would be a hit with the general book-reading public. What do I mean by that? In short, this game is incredible and everyone should play it, even those who don't understand the concept of VNs. Hira Hira is set in the 1920s in Japan, in a world similar to ours but with a fictional "disease" called aerodema, which is commonly called hihiru. The art style ais very beautiful, a look that is halfway between realism and the classic anime style, a look that, personally, I really like and complements the equally realistic but still drawn scenarios of the game. The plot follows two protagonists, a doctor who studies aerodema directly under the tutelage of the greatest specialist doctor in Japan and the second protagonist is a high school student who is living with family friends in Tokyo. The game alternates between the protagonists, but its theme about aerodema and the hihiru (people who suffer from the disease) is always the focus. Returning to aerodema and hihirus, this disease is quite strange at first, characterized by the sudden "death" of the patient who previously did not show any symptoms, but the patient somehow "resurrects" and returns with several symptoms, such as confusion, hallucinations, paleness and memory loss. Patients also suffer from decomposition, decaying over time to the point that they are called "living dead" by people and their mental state also tends to worsen. I do not intend to give spoilers and I will say right now, this game is incredible and if you have the slightest interest you should play it, but I will continue writing about the game, read it if you are interested. The key point of this game is how it manages to create a fictional disease and develop it by making an infinite number of parallels with various topics. First, the disease can easily be compared to Alzheimer's, autism, Down syndrome, etc. due to memory loss, behavioral changes, etc. It can be compared to more physical diseases such as leprosy, vitiligo, etc. because it physically alters users, and even to diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, etc. in terms of diseases that require special treatment and those infected suffer enormous prejudice. The game works with all these concepts, common sense, prejudices, collective health, moral issues, etc. in a very intelligent way and I guarantee that it will make you reflect on things you have done before in your life, what measures to take, how to deal with heavy topics, how to care with affection and attention, mistreatment and neglect. The characters are also extremely human and very well developed, several situations occur and very heavy and sensitive topics are handled masterfully. The game is somewhat heavy to read, don't expect fan service scenes or anything like that, except for a low level level in the high school charrecter, but the reading is heavier in the part of the doctor, who travels around Japan inspecting the hihiry patients and writing reports, which can be tiring for some. I would say that the game sets up and explains a universe at the beginning and in the second half it accelerates the plot and develops these topics more strongly. A true love letter to humanity, without a doubt one of the best VNs ever written.

It's a beautiful short story depicting various circumstances and experiences of physical and mental illness from multiple perspectives (patient, doctor, family, and friend). I wouldn't be surprised if the author was a primary caregiver for a close someone who wasn't able to take care of themselves. It's not written as crass or artless edutainment, but there's genuinely good advice in there, especially about the power and limitation of love when it comes to the day-to-day wear and grind of looking after someone. The main point of contention people may have with the story is its structural critiques about how society treats people with physical and mental illnesses. It's pretty toothless and mostly used to exonerate the familial abuse and ableism from the various people you learn about. A core idea the author keeps revisiting is that most people inherently want to do good, and that when we fail to do that for the most marginalised in society, it's a failure of community support, education, and economic resources. It's not something I entirely disagree with, but I think the game is too forgiving of people who choose to do horrid things even if their situation isn't conducive to a positive outcome. At the same time, a big reason why I enjoyed the game was the story's unwavering faith that even the most prejudiced among us can learn to be good. Every bad decision made by anyone in the story was a step away from being a good decision that could've been if their situation was just a little more different. Again, not a perspective I 100% agree with, but it's also not a vapid saccharine story, and I appreciated its affirmation of a shared humanity that can be found anywhere as long as we look and work to make the world a place for it. Also a really personal and humanistic portrayal of people suffering from physical and mental illness. Earlier I wrote that I wouldn't be surprised if the author was a primary caregiver for someone, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they also drew from personal experience as a patient as well.

A game that is definitely worthwhile to broaden your wisdom about discrimination and morality. The translation and writing is absolutely world-class. All the characters are really likable (I personally think I'd be Chinryu). Though the progression was slow to my taste, I was strangely more than willing to keep reading. And to top it all off, the art was so delicious i could tangibly lick it.

This is a beautiful and emotional story where the game's premise (a condition called Aerodema) serves as an excellent metaphor for problems in healthcare in the world today, especially when it comes to mental health and care for the elderly. The music and art are beautiful, and the story is well-paced and the sensitive subject matter is appropriately handled.

Excellent read. Visuals are great and music supplements the story well. If you do have around 10-20 hours laying around and wish to give this niche kind of story a try then I highly recommend it.
