Sometimes, enjoyment of a game goes beyond its evident flaws and limitations. Such is the case for Lizard Survivors: Battle for Hyperborea, a Russian-coded medieval fantasy game with lizard people (Danica Patrick approves), guns and all kinds of quirky humor. With the game being about a war between men and lizard people, players can choose between 3 heroes from each side, which in turn defines if your enemies are humans or lizards, changing the runs a little bit. Some of the weapons are rather... peculiar, as well, but I'd rather not spoil the quirks and jokes too much. There's even a banging electronic and nu-metal-ish soundtrack, really badass. What it lacks is... a lot of other aspects. While it's technically competent and visually solid, with some surprisingly detailed character art and even voiced dialogues (only in Russian though), the title lacks much depth and some polish. Slightly poor readability at times, especially when it comes to projectile-based enemies, and even a generally slow gameplay, that can become a little clunky at times due to some intrusive scenery. Only 2 stages, no permanent upgrades, a fairly limited palette of weapons, repetitive enemies over the 30+ mins runs, with all content unlocked from the start. I played just over 2 hours and I've already seen everything the game had to offer, essentially. Yeah, that's bad when compared to the bullet heaven genre's bests, at under 1EUR/USD (currently even on sale at merely 59 cents), it's hard to feel bad about this at all. What's here is solid fun and is humorous and bizarre enough to stand out, even with its limited scope and depth. Sometimes, that's enough. Bullet Heaven Fandom review #74. Did you ever hear of the tragic wars of the Ancient RUS, the sons of Perun, against the invading, barbarous serpentine argonians who threatened Hyperborea and Lake Baikal? I thought not. It's not a story the West would tell you. It is a Slav legend. The Scythian-Siberians were a tribe of people, so powerful and so wise due to the drinking of Baikal Water, that they had the power to influence life and politics from their throne in Hyperborea... They had such power and knowledge, that they were able to keep their ancestral lands free from capture or invasion, all while keeping the ones they cared about from dying. The way of the Baikal Water is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. The Ancient RUS became so powerful, that the only thing they feared was losing their sacred Lake Baikal. Which, eventually, of course -- Lizards came to steal it. However, the sons of PERUN had raised an entire generation of magically enabled and spiritually augmented SLAVS to fight for their ancestral land. However, this history became lost in modern times due to Soviet censorship, who were atheists that denied the Slavic people their powerful origins and ancient gods, until now. Ironic. Truly, the Slavs can save history but the history will not spare the Slavs. A truly excellent game, with deep gameplay, an innovative method of displaying the soundtrack details and easily accessible management of the volume (Music ALWAYS at 11) combined with vivid, historical story telling. One of the most realistic and authentic non-fiction games, without any embezzlements like the Assassin's Creed series or childish, western 'woke' revisions to the historical basis like NATO propaganda games (Age of Empires, Total War, etc) RUS NEVER SURRENDER AND ALL OF THIS FOR THE PRICE OF A CUP OF KVASS

I highly recommend it but the game is also a WASTED potential (as of 17.01.2024 at least). Don't get me wrong though! Me and my reptiloid wife had a blast with it! Killing slavic hordes while listening to kickass phonk was never so satisfying! The overall style in the game is simply GORGEOUS! I'd even say it's the best one in all VS clones. But sadly the game simply lacks content! There's no meta progression, only one map. There are also balance issues. I really hope the devs will not abandon the game! Because it has a potential to become the best VS clone, or at the very least the most stylish one! Glory to the Curt Connors! All hail to the reptile brain!

The gameplay is even worse than Vampire Survivors, of course, although many projects have long ago developed and improved the ideas inherent in it, but for some reason the mindless copying of vampires continues. However, unlike the Russ vs Lizards game, there is a style here, and the jokes are funny and do not distract from the gameplay. Thus, unlike the aforementioned colleague, it can really be called a game, and not a pile of assets. Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the genre, then you are unlikely to have enough for more than one race, but it will do for once.
